All families may need to tighten the purse strings every now and then, even while on holiday. Every day can’t be filled with the adventures that come with a price tag. Especially when you have multiple members of the family to cater for. For those days during your holiday, you don’t have to worry, our free things to do in Northumberland guide should help!

Walk in the hills

With the Cheviot hills right on the doorstep of our Wooler park Riverside, it’s obvious why this is our first choice for a free family day out. There are a huge number of fantastic walking routes to enjoy! They vary in ability too, so you can stick to the shorter routes when you have little ones not willing to walk as far – always a bonus!

Enjoy a family picnic

Why not grab your families favourite foods from our shop and head into the fields nearby for a family picnic. There are a number of great picnic spots on the edge of the Cheviots, including Wooler Common, and Ingram Valley. If the hills aren’t your thing, then why not enjoy a leisurely drive to Bamburgh Castle or Dunstanburgh Castle to enjoy a picnic on the beach with an impressive medieval backdrop. Just make sure that you take your litter home or use bins provided to help the wildlife!

Go wildlife watching

Northumberland is home to a number of amazing areas of outstanding beauty that will be ideal for spotting wildlife, head into the Northumberland National Park and see if you can spot the grouse, insects and more that live in some areas of the park. Though we’re sure the most exciting spot would be a wild goat in nearby Hethpool.

Again on the coast you could spot a great deal of wildlife. Whilst a boat trip to the Farne Islands to see wild seals, terns and more, would have a cost associated, you could head to Seahouses for a wildlife walk instead. Walk the Bamburgh to Seahouses section of the Northumberland Coastal Path and see how many types of birds you can spot.

Hit the beach

If the weather allows there are some fantastic beaches nearby to let the kids run free. This is the ideal free thing to do in Northumberland as there are some fantastic beaches around. Within just 20 minutes of your holiday home at Riverside in Wooler you can get to Bamburgh, Berwick and Cocklawburn to name a few! Cocklawburn provides an amazing rockpooling adventure for your kids!
