Our simple guide to protecting your holiday home
The winter months can take their toll on your holiday home. We've outlined a few simple steps below that you can take to safeguard your caravan or lodge. With these steps, paired with the comprehensive Winterisation service we provide, your holiday home is sure to be protected!
- Start in the bedroom and remove any valuables from cupboards, then leave the cupboard doors open for ventilation. Take bedding like duvets, pillows etc home or put in vacuum-sealed bags. Stand mattresses on their side and leave the wardrobe doors open, along with the bedroom and bathroom doors to improve airflow.
- In the kitchen, empty all food from the fridge and cupboards, including unopened packets. Clean the fridge with a weak bicarbonate of soda solution and the cupboards with an antibacterial spray. Clean all the worktops and the cooker.
- You should turn off and disconnect the bottled gas supply and store the canister safely. You can then light a gas ring until the flame dies to be certain there’s no gas left in the pipe.
- In the lounge area, clean all the surfaces and ensure all sofa cushions are moved away from the exterior walls. Rugs should be rolled up and stood on their ends.
- Throughout your holiday home, ensure that any blinds are left up to protect the mechanisms. Take down any nets or curtains to avoid mildew and take them home with you. If you choose to leave them up, make sure they’re left open.
- Once the inside is complete, ensure your gutters and downpipes are in good condition. If there are any gaps where insects or rodents could get in then block them appropriately, including putting the plugs in your sinks and shower and popping paper down the toilet. Check that the roof, chassis and skylights don’t have any leaks or loose joints and that the windows are secure.
- If you have any outdoor furniture, store it away in a safe location. If your steps are removable, place these inside the holiday home. If there’s vegetation growing near or under the holiday home, clear it to discourage wildlife.
