Dog walks in East Lothian

East Lothian has a number of great places to get out and explore with your four-legged companion. We’ve put a collection of our favourite dog walks to explore in East Lothian.

Lammermuir Hills

A walk to the Lammermuir hills is a must when visiting with your dog. Thurston Manor is nestled at the foot, meaning you can access the walk easily. There’s a range of fantastic routes to follow, ranging from easy and moderate, to walks that are a little more challenging for those who are more experienced. Our favourite route out of the many you can take begins at the Whiteadder Reservoir and ends at the Priestlaw Hill, allowing you to take in the breathtaking area in all of its glory when you reach the summit. This 7 mile walk includes the route taken down the Herring Road by the fishwives of Dunbar to carry herring over the hills to the nearby town of Lauder.

John Muir Country Park

If you’re looking for a relaxing stroll, a walk through John Muir Country Park is the perfect solution for you and your travelling companion. Visit the beautiful, Belhaven Bay, where you can take in the panoramic views of Bass Rock and the Forth Estuary. During your visit to Belhaven Bay, you might even be lucky to sight some birds nesting or simply take in the sea breeze and relax on the sandy dunes. From here, you can then take the trail up to the Dunbar Clifftop walk.

The Dunbar Clifftop

The Dunbar Clifftop Walk is a two part circuit, and can be easily accessed during a visit to the John Muir Country Park. This is one of the more gentle dog walks in East Lothian. Whilst strolling through the historic route, you will be able to take in the sights of the iconic red sandstone cliffs and travel on through to the historic Dunbar high street and harbour. The sea views you’ll come to witness are fantastic, and the fascinating volcanic rock formations such as the Doo Rock are not to be missed.

John Muir Way

Another walk that is easily accessed is The John Muir Way. This takes you from west to east Scotland, allowing you to take in the wonderful sights between North Berwick and Dunbar. The diverse range of sights to witness during this walk makes it a truly amazing experience, from farmland to saltmarshes and dramatic clifftop paths, this walk has everything including the unforgettable sea views.
